Virtual Christmas Light Switch on in Leeds!
15th November 2020
Leeds City Council is asking people to submit video clips and images of their Christmas light displays at home so they can feature in a dazzling digital montage that will be the climax of an exciting online event.
Held virtually for the first time in its history, the 2020 Leeds Christmas Lights switch-on will also see performances from panto and theatre stars along with messages from local sporting celebrities and the Lord Mayor of Leeds.
Previous years have seen crowds gather on Victoria Gardens for the annual festive showpiece which officially kicks off the countdown to Christmas.
But current social distancing requirements and restrictions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 have meant that the council’s events team have had to come up with creative ways to ensure thousands of people can still come together and celebrate the season safely.
Taking place on November 15, the finale of this year’s free, hour-long virtual switch-on could include footage and pictures of people in Leeds switching on lights on their tree, house or street.
The finished video will be set to a very special performance of Light up the Sky by local brother pop/rock band The Dunwells.
Monday 23rd November 2020
This year’s socially distanced Christmas festivities start at 7pm on Monday November 23 with the switch on of the town Christmas lights, that will also be commemorated with a special one-minute Otley Clap for Christmas.
The event is intended to bring us all together in spirit for a minute, even if we have to remain apart and stay in our homes or places of work.
While the Spring’s weekly Clap for Carers proved ever popular in its support of NHS staff and other key workers, stakeholders organising this special Christmas version such as the Town Council, Otley BID, Otley Town Partnership and The Chamber of Trade, are encouraging people to extend their show of gratitude beyond our wonderful carers.
So whether you want to show your support of the NHS, give appreciation to some of our businesses that remained open and provided a service during tough times, or simply remember a loved one, the event will offer the chance to bring the people you care about to mind at this special time of year.
Looking forward to next month, the town has also organised two Sunday opening days for businesses on December 6 (which would have been Victorian Fayre day and December 20, the last farmers’ market of the year.
