There has been some scientific research to investigate the effect of pregnancy on women’s feet, which concluded that feet are subject to irreversible changes in shape and size. Most importantly foot size and width increases, often between a half and one whole shoe size, and foot arches collapse. The changes seen in the studies were permanent and did not reverse after pregnancy, and they were found to worsen with further pregnancies. The impact on women suffering these problems were:
Increases in foot size leading to discomfort as shoes no longer fit properly.
Reduced foot arch height which effected posture and often led to pain in the ankles, knees, hips and back.
The changes experienced in the feet are the result of a pregnancy hormone called relaxin which is released from Week 7. It loosens ligaments and tendons to make your pelvis flexible for a more comfortable birth which is absolutely vital, however, this hormone also affects the whole body especially your feet.
Therefore it is really important to look after your feet during pregnancy, from as soon as 7 weeks right the way through.
