May Half Term 2022

With the days getting longer and the sun getting hotter it feels like the perfect time to come and explore Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal. Spend a full day running, jumping and discovering the abbey ruin and Studley Water Garden. If you find yourself in the deer park, keep an eye out and you may catch a glimpse of the new baby deer.

Pick up your watery-themed trail map and enjoy finding a variety of giant pond themed creatures as you wander the site. Let your nose lead the way, following the scents of wild garlic and bluebells filling the air. Head to the sweet chestnut tree on the abbey west green and listen to what happens behind the bark of a tree with our tree listening installation. The world has come alive again and you’ll be able to see signs of the late springtime all over the estate.

Join in our pond dipping activity, learn more about our watery wildlife and see what minibeasts you can discover. Take your hand at building a mini raft out of sticks and test how well it floats in the water garden. Or why not bring the whole family along and learn how to make a mini dragonfly using a peg?

All of our activities are free with normal admission and there’s no need to book, just pop along and have fun!

The circus returns to town as it pitches back up on Briggate for a second run as part of the forthcoming May Bank Holidays.

Young would-be clowns, acrobats and jugglers can once again try their hands at a range of circus disciplines on offer daily throughout the half-term school break from Saturday 28th May-Saturday June 4th 2022.

Brought back by LeedsBID, in association with The Yorkshire Circus and Super Friendz, the Pop-Up Circus will transform a section of the city’s main pedestrianised area into a performance space, with children able to watch an assortment of circus skills before trying them for themselves – all for free.

Each day starts with an introduction and short performance, before the chance for the young members of the audience to take part in one of three workshops a day, teaching multiple circus skills from spinning and juggling to stilt walking, unicycle and trapeze.

Offering activities for all ages and abilities, there is also the opportunity to get involved with daily story time sessions, arts and crafts and face painting, with free candy floss for those taking part.

May Half Term: Around the World in 80 Stories

28 May 2022- 5 June 2022

The expansive grounds and gardens are lovely walking spots, with or without four-legged companions. Each season brings new surprises including wild garlic in the spring, a sea of colourful blooms in summer in the formal gardens and stunning autumnal colours later on in the year.

The two playgrounds mean there’s plenty of space for running about and letting off steam, with zip wires for older children to enjoy.

The evolving zoo, Wildlife World, is a real highlight and visitors can see the Humboldt penguins splash and swim in their pool. Other colourful characters include Arthur the tapir, porcupines and a flamboyance of pink flamingos.

Art in the Park at Lister Park

Thu 20 Jan 2022 – Sat 30 Sep 2023

Stroll around Lister Park to view sculpture and public artwork, some on loan by the artists, others from Bradford’s own collections.

See Bingley based artist Marcus Levine’s steel clout nail sculpture ‘Hung Out to Dry’ and family favourite, fibreglass ‘Hochlandbew’ by Otmar Alt.

New to the Art in the Park series:
As if by magic on Yorkshire Day, a statue of Peter Pan has appeared in Bradford’s Lister Park as a gift from philanthropist Sir Trevor Pears.

The present cast is one of an edition of only eight full-scale versions made by the celebrated Morris Singer Foundry for the Fine Art Society from a bronze in Sefton Park, Liverpool.

The original, placed in London’s Kensington Gardens, was produced by renowned artist George James Frampton in 1912 in which the popular JM Barrie character is lifted up on a swirling rock populated by fairies, rabbits, squirrels and mice.

Other models and casts of the monument are to be found as far afield as Brussels, New Jersey, Toronto and Perth, Australia. Parts of the original plaster model are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

(Pick up the trail leaflet at Cartwright Hall reception to guide you or print off a copy from Bradford Musuems website.)

This is a challenging adventure and some obstacles are not suitable for all age groups. Children must be supervised at all times.

Useful Information

  • Tickets must be booked in advance
  • Children must be supervised at all times
  • This path is steep in sections with unguarded steep drops. It is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
