Tried and tested wheelchair accessible days out

Harewood House Leeds

Harewood House is a country house in Harewood near Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Designed by architects John Carr and Robert Adam, it was built between 1759 and 1771 for wealthy plantation owner Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron Harewood. There are over 100 acres of gardens at Harewood. They are full of variety, with plants from all over the world. The large adventure playground is a big hit with children as are the penguins and the bird garden. There is a café and gift shop and usually some sort of seasonal activity in the eco-pods & regular events being held.

  • Parking: Designated disabled bays are available in the car park.
  • The House Wheelchair Access: There is disabled access to both the State Floor and Below Stairs of the House, with wheelchair lifts and ramps in place.
  • The Shop Wheelchair Access: The Shop is wheelchair accessible though we did not visit it.
  • The Cafe Wheelchair Access: The Terrace and Courtyard Cafés are both wheelchair accessible. Access to the Terrace Cafe is via Below Stairs, or via the Terrace for electric wheelchair users.
  • The Grounds Wheelchair Access: The walk around the farm, bird garden and grounds are all paved but the bird garden does have some steep slopes which our electric wheelchair did not feel steady on. The ferry across the lake is also wheelchair accessible though we did not use it.
  • Accessible Toilets: Accessible toilets are available in the stables courtyard by the cafe.

RHS Harlow Carr Harrogate

Covid-19

Following the Government’s updated Coronavirus (COVID-19) plans, we are pleased to announce that we will be reopening our Gardens from June 1. Our priority remains the safety of members, visitors and staff, so to avoid overcrowding we will be using a pre-booking system for garden admission. Please see www.rhs.org.uk/gardens for further details.

The Gardens will be open 10am – 4pm, subject to pre-booking. It is essential that anyone intending to visit must book in advance for every person visiting. Please remember to bring your booking confirmation with you to show at the visitor entrance.

Due to high levels of interest you may experience delays in the online booking process; please bear with us. Please note you will not be allowed entry without confirmation of your booking.

Just a short distance from Harrogate town centre, this beautiful garden makes a great family day out. Enjoy some fresh air, catch up with friends and entertain the children all year round.

As well as beautiful planting displays, the garden also homes many fun natural play areas for adventurous children, including the Craggle Top Tree House, Log Maze, Logness Monster and the giant Woodland instruments.

Parking: There are ample disabled bays available in car park 1 right by the entrance.

Garden Wheelchair Access: The garden has ample routes which are well paved for wheelchair use. These routes pass by the lake, parks, bathhouse and Bettys Tea House in the garden. Some paths which stray from the main route are woodchipping. Electric mobility vehicles can be hired for the duration of the visit or manual wheelchairs are also available – booking recommended.

Shop Wheelchair Access: The shop has good wheelchair access including a ram to the lower level. The shop can be accessed from the garden or the entrance by wheelchair.

Bettys Cafe Wheelchair Access: Bettys is fully accessible with a disabled toilet in the restaurant.

Toilets: Accessible toilet is located in the main garden entrance with wide doors, grab rail and fitted alarm system. Additional ambulant toilets are located in the garden, the shop and restaurant.

  • Parking: Designated disabled bays are available in every car park. The house car park provides level access to Temple Newsam House. Access from the other car parks to the house is by gradual uphill pathways.
  • The House Wheelchair Access: Entry is gained at the front of the house through a wide door in place of an original bay window. Once inside the ground floor is fully accessible with lift access to the second floor. There is a mezzanine floor between the second & third floor which is not accessible but it consists of only 2 room so not much has to be missed. Lift access again to the third floor.
  • The Farm Wheelchair Access: The Farm has an old cobbled floor which our electric wheelchair felt unsteady on. Some may fair better but we gave it a miss.
  • The Cafe Wheelchair Access: The cafe is ground floor with wide doors and outdoor seating (weather permitting!) in a newer cobbled courtyard which our electric wheelchair coped well with.
  • The Grounds Wheelchair Access: The walk around the gardens and grounds are all well paved and were easily managed with our electric wheelchair and would equally have been fine in a push or manual chair.
  • Accessible Toilets: Accessible toilets are available in the house, stables courtyard and in a fully accessible Changing Places facility next to the accessible playground. Facilities in the changing places toilets include an emergency alarm, a fire alarm with a flashing light, rise and fall sink, bed and hoist. The Changing Places toilets and stables courtyard toilet are RADAR key operated.

Entry to Temple Newsam Estate is free of charge for carers.

Tickets are valid for the entire day on which they are purchased.
