So, what childcare support is available to me and what are the changes ahead?
Working parent entitlement
In April 2024 the first phase of the government funded childcare expansion was rolled out. Working parents of children over 2 years old may now be eligible for up to 15 hours of government funded childcare. From September 2024 this will be expanded to include children aged over 9 months. From September 2025 this will be further expanded to up to 30 hours of government funded childcare for children aged over 9 months.
Two-year-old funding
Eligible families who receive some form of additional government support, may be entitled to up to 15 hours of government funded childcare the term after their child turns two years old.

Universal three & four-year-old funding
Children will be eligible for up to 15 hours of universal funding the term after their third birthday. You don’t need to apply for this, but you will need to arrange this with your childcare provider.

Tax-free childcare
Working families can get up to £500 every three months (£2000 a year) per child to help with the cost of childcare Find out more here
Universal Credit Childcare

Early Years Careers
Are you looking for an exciting career opportunity that has a positive impact on young children? A career in childcare is unique, rewarding and there are different types of roles.
There are childcare career opportunities in nurseries, preschools, schools or breakfast/after school clubs or you can be an apprentice. Do something big – Early Years Careers. Alternatively, become your own boss and set up as a childminder. With the new grants, you can claim back the costs of registering as a new childminder. Find out more: Childminder start-up grant
You don’t need a qualification to start your career in childcare but getting a qualification can help you to progress your career.
Have you heard about skills bootcamps? They are free and flexible 16-week courses. Once completed, you’ll have the opportunity to move onto an accelerated apprenticeship. You may also be able to get funded Training and qualifications
