Keeping the Mini Mumblers happy and entertained over the October half term doesn’t need to break the bank with these fun, FREE or low-cost activities and events in and around Wharfedale & Craven.

1. Events and Activities at Wharfedale & Craven Libraries
Our local libraries have a range of free activities taking place over half term for all ages, some require booking so make sure you plan ahead!
24th October, Create, Make, Build, Ilkley Library: Free event.
24th October, Crafty Creations, Bradford City Library: Free event.
25th October, Jake Bakes A Monster Cake, Menston Library: Free event.
27th October, Super Saturdays Make, Create, Build, Bradford City Library: Free event.
30th October, Code Club hack-a-thon, Skipton Library, Free event.
31st October, Halloween Story Time & Crafts, Skipton Library, fancy dress encouraged: Free event.
2nd November, A Monster Mix, Otley Library: Free Event
Pirates, Pants and Wellyphants, Leeds Central Library. Weekdays until 24th November 2018. Free event.
On the 29th October at Leeds Central Library children can take part in a Draw Along Workshop with Nick Sharratt where he will show them how to draw some of his favourite characters. Suitable for children and families aged 4+.
2. Museums and Galleries
Leeds & Bradford Museums and Galleries have some fantastic family Halloween events at a number of attractions.
Kirkstall Abbey will be hosting a FREE ‘not so scary’ scarecrow trail between 30th October – 4th November around the abbey ruins and play a game of spooky hide and seek with the little ones. Free event.
Lotherton’s Spooky Scarecrow Trail is back and better than ever from 27th October – 4th November, now with extended opening times for eerie evening visits with older children. Spot the scarecrows around the estate, visit the brand new Skeletown to see the scary side of the Wild West and take part in chilling craft activities. Normal admission applies.

Leeds Industrial Museum will be ‘Putting the Happy in Halloween’ from 30th October – 1st November, discover the real stories behind Halloween and take part in jack-o’-lantern and willow wand making sessions each day. Normal admission applies.
Abbey House Museum If you’re looking for a spine-tingling fun this Halloween, head to the Victorian street, which has undergone a spooky makeover! Go along for FREE themed family fun all week. Make your own monster, witch or vampire or create the creepiest crawly! Join in magic potion making silly science or solve a murder mystery! Running 30th October – 2nd November. Normal admission applies.
Crafty Creatures Day at Leeds City Museum On the 30th October there will be a bumper day of activities at the museum where you can build animal dens, nests and lodges. Use recycled, junk materials to create art inspired by nature. There’ll be extra activities for young people aged 11+ too, including mosaic making. Free Event.
Crafty Creatures at Leeds City Museum Be a crafty creature this school holiday with making and constructing activities. Build like a beaver, nest like a bird or construct like a termite. B.Y.O animal toys if they want to join in. 30th October – 2nd November. Free event.
Creepy Crawlies at Temple Newsam. This half term you can meet real-life bugs, find out tips on how to spot them and what we do to stop them in their tracks. Follow the bug trail through the House and you can even make your own spooky spider or bed bug to take home! 27th October -4th November. Normal estate admission applies.
Pus & Pimples at Thackray Medical Museum. This half term the Thackray Medical Museum will be running Pus & Pimples workshops at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Use make-up techniques from stage and film to create the ravages of Smallpox, bursting Black Death buboes or the horror of gangrenous wounds
Half-term family drop-in: Lister’s Lanterns. It’s Museums at Night and when it gets dark, Lister Park will light up with lanterns, firejugglers and wonderful musicians. Drop into Cartwright Hall Art Gallery during the day and get prepared – make your very own lantern to light up the night.
The Big Draw Family Drop-In: Play! Cartwright Hall Art Gallery invites you to view the selection of giant puppets in the Cellar Gallery by Cecil Green Arts and then join their makers and puppeteers in creating a spoon or shadow puppet.
Nature Events at Cliffe Castle. A series of free nature events for under-fives will take place at Cliffe Castle Museum and Park in Keighley. Events will include nature play, stories and Halloween crafts.
* Get a Leeds card (£10 a year) and a free breeze card for the kids to get discounted entry into lots of council-run and local attractions.
3. One-Off Events
Leeds Kirkgate Market will have a Halloween Trail, Facepainting and Crafts running on the 27th October, suitable for all ages.
Leeds Play Network will be running free play sessions (29th & 30th October) with a Halloween theme this half term. There will be lots of arts and crafts featuring spiders, bats, pumpkins and witches. On the 30th October, they will also be running a Spooky Glow in the Dark Slime Workshop. (Free events but booking is required via Eventbrite for these events.)
4. Days Out and Activities
Halloween Spider Hunt at Kirkgate Arcade, Otley. Running throughout October 2018 Children must be between the ages of 4 and 11 years old and at all times be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Kids go FREE at Harlow Carr this Half Term Enjoy a witchy adventure with Room on the Broom at RHS Garden Harlow Carr from 27th October – 4th November. Follow a spooky trail around the garden and take part in creepy crafts and a variety of outdoor workshops and storytelling. Click the link to download your Kids Go FREE voucher.
Bolton Abbey Pumpkin Trail– Follow the trail of oversized pumpkins through Strid Wood and discover the mystery doors hidden among the trees. Behind each door is a clue to help unravel the witches magical spell. This is a free event. The estate’s admission of £10 per vehicle will apply. Running 20th October – 4th November.
School Of Wizards & Witches at Thornton Hall Country Park. Join the school of Wizards & Witches! Complete the activities, included in your admission, to pass your ‘Witch & Wizard’ exams! Running 20th October – 2nd November.
Spooks, Activities and Adventures in the Dales at Kilnsey Park Estate. Enjoy the Pumpkin trail, roast marshmallows over a campfire and enjoy the crafts in the magic teepee! Running 27th October – 4th November.
Halloween Specials at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. Frequent trains will run during the daytime (Saturday and Sunday) with decorations, excitement and much more! Running 27th & 28th October.
Spooktacular Halloween Trail at Thorp Perrow. Scary spooks and witches, ghosts and goblins in the ditches! The spooktacular Halloween trail is back at Thorp Perrow! Running 30th October – 4th November.
Creepiest Creatures at Tropical World Discover some of the ‘Creepiest Creatures’ at Tropical World this half term. Learn weird and wonderful facts about them, experience Creepiest Creatures up close in handling sessions (booking required) and complete the fun Creepiest Creatures quiz for a trick or treat. Running 27th October – 4th November.
World War Week at The Royal Armouries Free entry to the Royal Armouries including the free Water Taxi outside! Meet characters from both World Wars as they recount their experiences through dramatic performances, storytelling and combat demonstrations. Outside on the square there’ll be a full-size Spitfire! Running 27th October – 4th November.
