Recommended for family audiences over the age of 8, Chotto Xenos is a reimagining of Akram Khan’s award-winning full-length solo XENOS. Like the original piece, Chotto Xenos uses a solo dancer to explore questions around war and military action – however, this reworking is designed to be more accessible for young people.
Captivating and powerful, Chotto Xenos takes young audiences back in time to tell the forgotten and often ignored stories of colonial soldiers who fought in World War I. For this production, Akram Khan has joined forces with Sue Buckmaster, Artistic Director of Theatre Rites, in order to shine a light on the important, though often difficult questions around conflict for younger audiences and their families.
Many young people are exposed to images of war through social media or video games early on in their lives. Theatre and dance offer the perfect medium to look at this topic from a more rounded perspective. In Chotto Xenos, one talented dancer tells the story of one soldier’s experiences, representative of those faced by many others, in a way that’s accessible and easy to understand.
Blending dynamic choreography, evocative visuals and a stirring score, Chotto Xenos by Akram Khan Company is made for the whole family. Catch this compelling and timely piece at Riley Theatre, Leeds on Friday 29 & Saturday 30 April.
