You are provided with a map to follow around Leeds City Centre. There are two walks that you can complete separately or together, they’re each a little over an hour long. As you follow the route you need to look all around you to find the answers to the questions in the booklet. It’s a great way of making sure that you notice everything, and I must admit we saw lots more than we were expecting! My husband and I have worked in the city centre for years, and there were loads of new discoveries on the streets I’ve walked many times before! Because we were looking around so much we also spotted things that weren’t part of the trail too.
The questions were too difficult for my five-year-old, but it was easy to adapt the trail- instead of asking her for the answers to the clues, we simply asked her to find the plaques for us using the ‘Where’s the Answer?’ page. For example, in Trevelyan Square, we told her we had to find a plaque next to the fountain- and she took great delight in finding it for us. There are also 5 picture match questions that she could do too.
At each section of the walk, the booklet provides some history about the sites in Leeds, again, I never realised I knew so little about this city I’ve been living in for twenty years! We didn’t actually complete both walks (it was a little too far for the little ones) so we did a hybrid of them both which worked out well, and means that I can go back and do it myself another time (when I can appreciate all that heritage that little bit more)!
As a family who loves to travel, I love the fact that there are trails across lots of places in Britain too. Quite often when we visit new places it’s difficult to make sure you don’t miss anywhere out- this gives you a clear focus of your route and ensures you see the best that a city has to offer. Our children can get quite resistant when we suggest walks, so having a ‘spotting’ activity worked really well.
Best of all is the price. It’s only £7.49 to download a PDF (you can choose the format to either print it or use on your mobile device) or a little more to receive a booklet posted to you. AND we have a MUMBLER DISCOUNT OF 20% to use- so you can have an activity that the whole family can enjoy for just £6. Bargain. USE CODE MUMBLER20.
There are a number of other places in Yorkshire that you might want to consider trying, including Harrogate, York, Sheffield, Ripon and Hull. We’ve been meaning to go for a day out in Hull for ages (once restrictions lift) so this will be a great way to explore the city.
Thanks so much Curious About for giving us this activity!!
