Christchurch is a Methodist/URC Local Ecumenical Partnership, an exciting and dynamic church at the centre of Ilkley giving it a strategic position for mission at the heart of this attractive Yorkshire town.
Our church offers many examples of Fresh Expressions of worship and fellowship: three services on Sunday which cater for different elements of our church family, a thriving parent and toddler group, Music Movers for babies and toddlers, Christchurch Guild, House Groups, a Youth House Group, a Friday Shoppers Service, a Coffee Centre open all week, schools work and networking with Churches Together in Ilkley (CTI). We see all of these as expressions of our church’s worship and opportunities for mission. For more details of the life of Christchurch see our website at www.christchurchilkley.org.uk.
In 2008 Christchurch was accredited as being ‘A Child Friendly Church’- we are hoping to expand on the successful work that our church does with children, young people and families by employing a Lay Worker with particular skills in these areas. This key person will report to the minister and has always been regarded as having a major role in the life of our church. Your responsibilities will include:
To help further develop the work being done with children, young people and families, liaising with existing teams to help develop the teaching offered to children and young people, seeking to further establish groups that provide for their social and spiritual needs.
To work in close collaboration with the Minister in developing and implementing strategies for mission and nurture.
Developing and strengthening community links and opportunities for witness and mission, in conjunction with local schools and Churches Together in Ilkley (CTI).
Seeking to promote a spirit of cooperation and volunteering through example and encouragement.
Assisting in the worship life of the church by regular attendance at services and being involved with worship at the On-line@9 service by supporting the worship teams and building relationships especially with our children and young people.
Liaising as appropriate with church committees on matters of pastoral concern, worship and nurture.
To uphold and support the implementation of the church’s policy on ‘Safeguarding Children and Young People’.
Keeping a record of work undertaken and prepare relevant documentation for reports or appraisals as required.
Attending and reporting to Christchurch’s quarterly Church Meeting and Church Council meetings.
There is a possibility that a small part share of the job may, at a later stage, include similar work at a nearby circuit church.
This role would suit someone who already participates in the life of a Christian church or community, someone who is able to present a strong and prayerful Christian example to others. You will be someone who actively enjoys working with children and young people.
It is likely that you will have been educated to at least GCSE/O level and that you may have a recognised practical mission based, biblical or theological qualification, though those qualified by experience are also welcome to apply.
You will be expected to work an average of 40 hours per week and will need to be flexible to include some evening and weekend duties. The appointment will be subject to your obtaining a satisfactory enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau.
In return for your experience and enthusiasm, Christchurch offers an annual salary of up to £22 000 per annum with 20 days holiday plus bank holidays or time in lieu, and 3 extra post-Christmas closure days (31 days in total). The position is for an initial period of three years with the possibility of it being extended.
